Fire Extinguishers

Are there any Fire Extinguisher recharging requirements as to who I should use to recharge my fire extinguishers?

Types of extinguisher - I am trying to update some details at work and notice on the HSE website that it states none of the fire extinguishers can be used on Metal Fires. Will you kindly let me know what can be used on metal fires?

Colour coding - I received information that the colour of all extinguishers are now red with coloured bands to identify contents. Could you please advise me as to the date this change occurred and the situation regarding existing sites still using the old colours. i.e. should they be changed to the new colours and if so what is the time scale for doing so?

Should dry powder extinguishers be used inside a building or room or not? We are installing in a resort and one recommendation is for dry powder in the rooms and office buildings. We have been UK trained and our training is not to use it in the buildings. What should we do and what are the reasons please?

What types of fire extinguishers do I need for my physiotherapy practice? The practice is in a small stone built terrace house on two stories. Space is tight. Is it necessary to have an upstairs extinguisher? I would be worried that this could create a trip hazard or partial obstruction of the narrow passage way. There would possibly be space for 1 extinguisher in a small alcove. What do you think?

Extinguisher location - We are a dental practice who have a decontamination unit and although we have the necessary fire risk assessments and fire extinguishers, we recently had an incident where one of our autoclaves overheated and caught fire. There was nothing in the room to use so the technician risked burning herself to take the plug out of the socket, fortunately she was unharmed. However, we are concerned that there should be something within the room itself to hand to use. The fire extinguishers are just outside the room. Therefore we are looking into obtaining a small fire extinguisher or fire blanket specifically for that area so there is something quickly to hand if this should ever happen again. Please could you advise which would be more appropriate and which one would you suggest in purchasing.

Extinguisher provision. Has legislation changed? - We are a Fire Extinguisher servicing company based in London. Some of our customers are landlords and Children’s day nurseries. We have had reports from some clients that they no longer require portable fire fighting equipment. The information seems to be coming from their H&S advisers. They have asked me to find out if there has been a change to the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. Could you shed any light on this matter?

Having just come over from South Africa I have been informed that fire extinguishers are for the use of the fire brigade which does not sound logical. Could you please give me the correct procedures / requirements etc for the UK? Although I have done a 3 day fire fighting course in SA a number of years ago I still have a general idea of fire fighting.

Can you please forward any advice regarding the use of fire extinguishers in 7.5T waste collection vehicles? - collecting plastics/metals/glass; but no hazardous materials.
