Mike started his career as a technician in building materials research and science departments of colleges before taking the position of Fire Safety Manager at the National Institute for Medical Research. Here he was responsible for all staff training and management of a fire and chemical response team of 15 technicians, as the site had a wide variety of fire risks as well as biohazard and radiation sources.
Mike joined the FPA training department on its move to Borehamwood from London and initially ran fire warden courses with live fire tackling, before progressing on to fire safety management courses. In more recent years, Mike has also carried out extensive training with Fire and Rescue Services on the National Occupational Standards (NOS), covering Building Regulations, fire alarm systems, emergency lighting and fire doors.
Appointed to the expert panel to re-write the fire alarms part of the NOS in safety and security systems, Mike was then part of the City & Guilds team to write the new level 2 and 3 content for electricians 1852 and 1853 courses.Mike is also co-author of the 2008 publication Fire Detection and Alarm Systems and holder of the CFPA Europe Diploma.
