Adair Lewis is Technical Manager at the Fire Protection Association. He was one of the first engineers to achieve recognition on both the life safety and property protection streams of the Institution of Fire Engineers’ Register of Fire Risk Assessors. Adair is the author of “The Prevention and Control of Arson” and is the co-author of “Fire Risk Management in the Workplace”. He has contributed to many other FPA publications and assisted with the drafting of several Home Office and HSE guidance documents.
Prior to joining the FPA in 1987 Adair served for 20 years as a forensic scientist at the Metropolitan Police Forensic Science Laboratory, the latter ten years as head of the Fire Investigation unit. During this time he attended the scene of almost every major fire in the south east of England. Notable examples include fires at: Clanricarde Gardens (Notting Hill), S&M Carpets, Alexandra Palace, the Savoy Hotel, Denmark Place Bars, the Italian Embassy explosion, Kings Cross underground station fire, numerous commercial premises, Ladbrooke Grove (Paddington) Rail Crash and Colindale construction site fire.
Materials found at scenes were analysed in the laboratory and the results interpreted in the light of the prevailing circumstances and evidence available. Following the production of detailed reports, evidence was often presented by Adair in court. The wide spectrum of cases investigated resulted in evidence being given on many occasions in magistrates’, coroners’, criminal and civil courts.
Adair’s time is now spent using his experience to reduce incidence of fire in domestic, commercial and industrial settings. As well as managing the wide range of programmes of fire safety audits and fire risk assessments carried out by the FPA on behalf of their clients, Adair has for nearly 20 years carried out large numbers of risk assessments, fire safety inspections and audits himself. These include offices occupied by central government departments, NHS trusts, secure military sites, industrial, commercial and residential premises. Adair also specialises in advising on fire safety matters in hotels, both in the UK and abroad.
Other activities include presenting lectures and talks on a wide range of subjects, particularly those associated with fire risk assessment, deliberate fire raising, the threat of terrorism, vehicle fires and aspects of fire investigation. Adair has also worked on a number of more in depth, bespoke consultancy projects over the years he has been at FPA. He represents the FPA on number of BSI and other national and international standards committees. Finally, he is the FPA’s quality manager.
